How to Choose a Coating for Your Application

PVD and CVD coatings compared across steel, stainless and cast iron.

How to Choose a Coating for Your Application

PVD or CVD

PVD coatings are applied at lower temperatures and keep a sharp edge, which suits solid carbide tools and finishing operations. CVD coatings are thicker and more heat resistant, which suits inserts running at higher cutting speeds.

  • PVD: sharp edges, solid carbide tools, finishing
  • CVD: thicker coating, inserts, higher cutting speeds
  • AlTiN for elevated temperatures and dry machining
  • TiAlN and AlCrN for balanced wear resistance

Matching coating to workpiece

Steel, stainless steel and cast iron each behave differently at the cutting edge. The coating has to be chosen together with the substrate and the cutting data, not on its own.

Send us your material and cutting parameters and we will recommend a coating and grade combination.
